Gazing at the Contemporary World: Japanese Photography from the 1970s to the Present

Presented in association with the Japan Foundation, this exhibition ponders the transformations of Japanese society, with the growth of cities at the expense of traditional communities.

Part of the Perth International Arts Festival

Comprising assemblages constructed from plastic deposited on Greta Beach, Christmas Island via the Indian Ocean, that transform detritus into intricate miniature worlds. Williams is the narrator, inviting us to engage with the lives and histories of the Malay and Chinese people who live on this remote island, as well as the refugees who pass by. Sat hours are 12-4.45.

Free Artist talks at 2pm: Saturday 13 Feb and Saturday 6 March, RSVP requested.

The project has been supported by Department of Culture and the Arts, Western Australia and the Australian Council.

°SOUTH is a collective of Australia’s most creative documentary photographers - Sean Flynn, Tim Page, Stephen Dupont, Jack Picone, Ben Bohane, Michael Coyne, Ashley Gilbertson and WA’s David Dare Parker - who have covered conflicts from Vietnam to present day Afghanistan. With the courage of a soldier and the eye of a witness these photographers have created images of power and compassion that continue to influence public opinion.
